College of Science Alumni Association

Bernard Price BS'88, MS'97

The University of Utah College of Science has established a formal Alumni Association to advance the university’s and the college’s pursuit of excellence by forging and preserving relationships among alumni, students, and the community.
The College of Science, established in 1970, is now one of the largest colleges within the university, and has some 12,500 distinguished and diverse alumni living and working around the world. Shortly after becoming dean of the College of Science in July 2007, Pierre Sokolsky realized the importance of reconnecting with alumni, friends, and supporters of the college. Within one year, Sokolsky named Brian Saam to be the associate dean for advancement, with a primary responsibility to foster the creation of a College of Science Alumni Association.
An outreach committee was organized and met for the first time on April 22, 2008. The committee consisted of local alumni, faculty, and staff interested in forming an association for the college. During the summer months, the outreach committee coalesced into a core group of eight individuals dedicated to pursuing the college’s alumni relations objectives. In addition, each of the college’s four departments – biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics and astronomy – has assigned a faculty member representative to assist alumni efforts.
The outreach committee hosted a Donor Appreciation Day in October 2008 to invite local alumni and donors and their families to campus for breakfast and candid, “insider” tours of faculty research and interactive demonstrations. The event attracted additional people to support the association.
By January 2009, the committee had become the College of Science Alumni Association (CoSAA) with a board of directors consisting of Mr. Bernard Price BS’88, MS’97, as president, Mr. Richard Green PhD’03, JD’07, as vice president, Mr. Jim Arveseth BS’69, as historian, and Dr. Tammy Zagorec- Marks BS’76, MD’84 as chair of the membership committee.
The Alumni Association bylaws and governing authority were approved in March 2009. We are excited to invite you now to reconnect and get involved with the College of Science in new, meaningful ways.

Sincerely,

Greetings: I graduated from the U. of Utah in 1959 with an MS in Science Education. This came about due to an NSF Academic Year Institute directed by Dr. Thomas Parmely of Physics. The one-year educational experience yet remains a “high water mark” for me. Paul Hansen, chaired my committee, Franklin S. Harris, Jr,, and Leo Provost were members. Henry Eyring singed my thesis. In later years, it became apparent that Henry Eyring was “robbed” by the Nobel Committee. His work in the chemical industry was basic as it gets. Of course, you now have Laureate “Super” Mario in Chemistry!
OH, and in the Engineering School was a Prof. Gore–Goretex! My favorite teacher was foremost ecologist, Clarence Cottom!! Keep up the good work.
I am now Professor Emeritus at Washington State U. and have published extensively and had more than my share of funded R & D project. Go Utes!
