The College of Science invites undergraduate students to apply for the following scholarships. Each scholarship application requires letters of recommendation. Academic or research faulty who are asked for a letter of recommendation should be provided a signed Permission to Release Waiver form, and a copy of the form should be submitted with the scholarship application to the College of Science Dean’s Office (220 JTB).

All scholarship applications submitted to the College of Science Dean’s Office require only one official University of Utah transcript and one official transcript for other colleges and/or universities attended.

If the scholarship you are applying for requires you to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) you must file the FAFSA by the scholarship application deadline.

Your FAFSA file must be completed by the On-Time File Completion date of April 1, 2009 to be considered for the scholarship.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship - $7,500 Award

 

The Goldwater Foundation awards scholarships to outstanding undergraduate students in the spring of 2010 for use during the 2010-2011 academic year. Awards are made on the basis of merit to students who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue research careers in mathematics, natural sciences or engineering. The University of Utah may nominate up to four students each academic year.

Goldwater Candidate Characteristics:

  • Strong commitment to a research career in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering;
  • Student of promise who displays intellectual intensity in science or mathematics; and
  • Potential for significant future contribution in his or her chosen field.

Scholarship Criteria:

To be considered for nomination a student must:

  • Be a current sophomore or junior pursuing a bachelor's degree on a full-time basis.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or permanent resident.
  • Have a demonstrated interest in a research career in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering.

To apply for the Goldwater Scholarship:

1. Complete the application online at www.act.org/goldwater. University of Utah Internal Application Deadline: November 23, 2009. In addition, you will need to contact three research or academic faculty members who will complete an electronic recommendation letter for you, and provide each of them with a signed University Permission to Release Waiver form. It is recommended that you begin your application as soon as possible so the recommenders will have sufficient time to complete their recommendation by November 23, 2009.

2. Supporting documents due to the College of Science Dean's Office (220 JTB) by November 23, 2009, include:

  • Essay, typed and confined to 2 pages (one sided pages only) with a font size no smaller than 11 pt. (Include your name and institution name at the top of each page and sign your name at the bottom)
  • Copies of three University Permission to Release Waiver Forms
  • Official University of Utah transcript
  • Official transcript(s) from other institutions you have attended
  • Voluntary Survey Form (optional)
  • Application/Supporting documents checklist

3. The secondary school transcript is due to the College of Science Dean's Office (220 JTB) no later than December 15, 2009.

NOTE: The University of Utah internal application deadline is November 23, 2009! (The February 1, 2010 deadline mentioned in the Goldwater Foundation announcement material is the deadline for the University nominations to the Goldwater Foundation.)  

Dan Hola Leadership Scholarship - $2,000 Tuition Waiver 

 

Five Dan Hola Leadership Scholarships are available for Pacific Islander juniors and seniors who have declared a College of Science major.

Scholarship Criteria:

• Current sophomore and juniors who are of Pacific Island decent.

• Must be a declared College of Science major (biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics).

• Highly recommended that all applicants file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with the Financial Aid & Scholarship office online at www.sa.utah.edu/finance/ by the application deadline.

NOTE: The Dan Hola Leadership Scholarship application must be submitted to the Student Initiatives Office located in the Sill Center.

Kennecott Scholarship - $4,000 Award plus paid internship with Kennecott  

 

Two Kennecott scholarships are available for sophomores, juniors and seniors. The award offers the recipients the opportunity to meet and study with other members of the Society of Kennecott Scholars at the Kennecott House, Fort Douglas. In addition, the recipients will participate in a paid summer internship program with Kennecott.

Scholarship Criteria:

• Must be a sophomore, junior or senior.

• Must be a declared College of Science major (biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics).

• Must be a full time student (12 or more credit hours per semester).

• Minimum GPA of 3.5 or higher.

• Willing to fulfill a paid internship with Kennecott during summer 2010.

Joseph T. Crockett M.D. Memorial Scholarship - $2,000 Award 

 

Twelve Joseph T. Crockett Scholarships are available for juniors, seniors and graduate students who have declared a College of Science major.

Scholarship Criteria:

• Must be a declared College of Science major (biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics).

• Applicants must have completed at least 30 semester hours at the University of Utah by the beginning of fall semester 2009 and 10 semester hours at the University of Utah by the time of application.

• Transfer applicants must have completed 10 semester hours at the University of Utah by the time of application.

• Minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher.

• Applicants must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with the Financial Aid & Scholarship office online at www.sa.utah.edu/finance/ by the application deadline. Your FAFSA file must be completed by the On-Time File Completion date of April 1, 2009 to be considered for the scholarship.

College of Science Dean’s Scholarship - $2,500 Tuition Waiver

Eight College of Science Dean’s Scholarships are available for juniors and seniors. Each scholarship covers tuition and fees up to $2,500.

NOTE: With the exception of students paying out-of-state tuition, students who already have tuition waiver scholarships are not eligible.

Scholarship Criteria:

• Must be a declared College of Science major (biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics).

• Applicants must have completed at least 30 semester hours at the University of Utah by the beginning of fall semester 2009 and 10 semester hours at the University of Utah by the time of application.

• Transfer applicants must have completed 10 semester hours at the University of Utah by the time of application.

• Minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher.

Theodore Verender Hanks Scholarship - $5,000 Award 

 

One Theodore Verender Hanks Scholarship is available to a non-resident of Utah (with preference given to residents of Idaho).

Scholarship Criteria:

• Non–resident of Utah (with preference given to residents of Idaho).

• Must be a declared College of Science major (biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics).

• Applicants must have completed at least 15 semester hours at the University of Utah by the beginning of fall semester 2009.

• Minimum GPA of 3.3 or higher.

• United States citizen.

• No history of use or sale of illegal drugs.

• Good school citizenship.

Mihalopoulos Family Scholarship in Science and Math Teaching - $2,000 Award 

 

One Mihalopoulos Family Scholarship in Science and Math Teaching is available for a junior, senior or graduate student who is committed to teaching science and/or mathematic education in the secondary school system in the state of Utah. Preference is given to men and to active members of the Greek Orthodox Church (active members of the Greek Orthodox Church must also submit a letter of recommendation from their priest) although the scholarship is not restricted to such.

Scholarship Criteria:

• Must be a declared College of Science major (biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics).

• Minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Don and Rebecca Reese Scholarship in Science Teaching - $2,000 Tuition Waiver 

 

Two Don and Rebecca Reese Scholarships in Science Teaching are available for juniors, seniors and/or graduate students who are committed to teaching science and/or mathematic education in the secondary school system in the state of Utah.

Scholarship Criteria:

• Must be a declared College of Science major (biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics).

• Minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher.

• Applicants must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with the Financial Aid & Scholarship office online at www.sa.utah.edu/finance/ by the application deadline. Crocker Science House Residential Living Opportunity - $1,000 Award 

 

The College of Science honors outstanding students with the title of Crocker Science Scholar, an award of $1,000, and the opportunity to share a historic residence in the Gary L. and Ann S. Crocker Science House on Officers Circle, Fort Douglas. Double rooms and single rooms are available. Total cost for the 2008-09 academic year $4,426 - $7,244 depending on room and meal plan. Residents must contract with Housing & Residential Education (HRE) for their residence and required meal plan. Contact HRE for room and dining rates (801) 587-2002 or www.housing.utah.edu.

Scholarship Criteria:

• Must be enrolled in a science related curriculum at the University of Utah for a minimum of one semester

• Priority is given to students who have declared a major in the College of Science

Crocker House Application

College of Science Crocker Undergraduate Internship - $1,500 Award

 

The College of Science Crocker Undergraduate Internship Award is available to outstanding students who are a declared College of Science major, have a minimum GPA of 3.00 and have secured an internship with a science-based company.

To apply for the award, complete the internship application and submit to the College of Science Dean's Office (220 JTB). A complete application includes a current official University of Utah transcript and a written verification of employment letter signed, including internship duties, by internship supervisor.

To assist you in finding an internship, it is recommended that you register with Career Services.
