ACCESS Scholarship Program
for Women in Science and Mathematics
Designed to integrate women into science, mathematics, and engineering careers, ACCESS offers 21 scholarships each year to women who are incoming freshmen students at the University of Utah.
A $3,500 cash stipend award provides flexible financial assistance for the first academic year. Participants attend an integrated science class during the summer before their first academic year, which introduces them to research and laboratory techniques and analysis in math and science. They also become familiar with College of Science faculty, facilities, staff, and their ACCESS peers. In short, the summer course establishes their academic and social support system.
Finally, they receive hands-on experience in technical and research areas. ACCESS places students in a research position in an area of their interest during their first year at the U! In comparison, many undergraduates do not get laboratory experience until their third year in college or even later.
During the school year, there are follow-up seminars and study groups which continue building the support system.
Eligibility:
---Must be admitted to the University of Utah as a matriculated (degree seeking) student.
---Intends to major in science, math or engineering.
NOTE: The ACCESS Scholarship is a cash stipend award that DOES NOT conflict with most University Scholarships, such as Honors at Entrance, Leadership, and Diversity Scholarship.
Deadlines: Applications for the next academic year are available at high school counseling centers, or through the College of Science website or office. Completed applications, including transcripts, a brief personal letter and two letters of recommendation must be received by the College of Science no later than February 22, 2008.
Applicants will be informed of results by mid-April 2008. There will be a special orientation luncheon in May 2008 to introduce the recipients and their parents to the program and the University of Utah.
